Hat-trick of tries helps Ross-on-Wye to strong win

By Ross Gazette sports reporter in Rugby

With the sun on their backs, Ross put together an almost error-free first half to put the game against Bristol Aero, and the bonus point to bed and coasted out the second half to register a convincing 54-0 victory.

The visitors brought a big pack and some recent success but Ross made them look very ordinary in the first half. All aspects of their game came together – strong defence, great set piece and some sublime faultless handling saw Ross race to an early lead.

Winger Craig Smith opened the scoring, then tries came at regular intervals as Ross were relentless in their attack. Although the visitors’ defence was willing, it could not cope and at the break Ross were 42-0 ahead with scores from Jonnie Baynam, Thai Hayward, Craig Smith, completing his hat trick and Captain Casey Morgan. Fly half Aaron Ryder added six faultless conversions.

With the game won Ross struggled to maintain their levels of intensity in the second half and this gave the visitors a respite and an opportunity to get into the game.

Their big ball carriers did try to get them on the front foot but the Ross defence was solid and organised and was able to shut out the visitors for the whole 80 minutes.

Two second half scores from AJ and Marcus Barnard took the final score to 54-0.

The team is very grateful to their sponsor, the Wye Valley Maze and Butterfly Zoo for their support. The man of the man was Craig Smith for three great tries, but in addition every member of the team played their part in a comprehensive display of excellent rugby.

The last league game for Ross is away in Bristol on April 22nd with both 1st and 2nd teams travelling.
