The latest ‘major’ in Ross Golf Club’s extensive summer events programme was the Annual Gordon Blake Cup/County Cup medal qualifier which was supported by a massive 129 members.
For 13 handicapper, Nigel Yates it provided the perfect opportunity for him to complete his most accomplished 18 holes golfing performance since he joined the Club in 2009.
Nigel got off to a flying start with two birdies in his opening nine holes to reach the turn in just one over gross par. Keeping clear of problems enabled Nigel to sign for a highly impressive gross 78, nett 65 medal score, to gain some honours board recognition and a two shots handicap reduction as well.
The runner-up, 15 handicapper Peter Smith also performed heroically on the day in being one under gross par after ten holes, although ultimately his gross 82, nett 67 score just fell short of the top spot despite earning Peter a two shots handicap reduction too.
With 12 of the top 14 players gaining handicap reductions, the overall standard of play was highly praiseworthy. Those to be commended included Richard Moore, nett 68, Shaun Sturge and James Porter, with nett 69s, and a host of nett 70s, represented by Martin Pimlow, Shaun Reynolds, Peter Bennett, Club President Doug Duncanson, Derek Hancock, Mick Merrick and Chris Kenny.
