Goodrich Ladies travelled to Halesowen to begin their summer campaign in Division 3 of the H & W League on Sunday, April 30th.
First pair, Stephanie Howell and Wendy Jenkins, playing together for the first time in a match, knew they were in a tight first rubber when the first set went to a tie-break. They won this 7-6 (7-5), but then they quickly lost the second set 2-6.
Not to be outdone, the Goodrich pair discussed tactical changes which saw them win the third set 6-2. Their second rubber saw them take the first set 6-0, but the second set was a lot closer until the ninth game when Goodrich broke serve, then served the set out, 6-4. The second pair, lefties Jill Brown and Kirsten Ainsworth, took their first rubber in straight sets 7-5 and 6-2, but came up against tougher opposition in their second rubber. Although winning the first set 6-3, they conceded the next two sets 2-6 and 3-6.
Third pair, Kim Martin and Lesley Winters, were overpowered in their first rubber going down 1-6 and 4-6, and were unlucky not to get more out of their second rubber which was much closer, 5-7 and 6-7.
As the teams were level on rubbers, three each, it was time to count up the games and after being double checked it was announced that Goodrich had got the winning draw by one game, 67 to 66.
The ladies next match is at home on Sunday, 14th May at 10.30am against Ombersley A. For more information about Goodrich Tennis Club, please contact Ms K Martin at email@example.com or 07801 314333.
