Wins at Worcester for Ross-on-Wye rowers

By Ross Gazette sports reporter in Rowing

Ross Rowing Club’s excellent start to the regatta season continued at Worcester on Saturday with three event wins, and several race wins.

In their final preparation race for the National Schools Regatta on Friday, the WJ14 coxed quad of Katie Smith, Heidi Brodholt, Ellie Lown, Lucy Burden and Alastair Green (cox) saw off opposition from Stourport, Cheltenham Ladies College and RGS Worcester to win the overall event. This was quickly followed by a very impressive win by Imogen Seal, Emily Hermon, Ella Bardsley-Taylor, Niamh Hickey and Elic Wales (cox) in the WJ13 coxed quad, unexpectedly beating a really good crew from City of Bristol in a very close encounter.

A hugely successful day was rounded off by a senior win for Graham Watling and Dave Sykes in a coxless pair event against younger opposition from Stourport. Both also coach the junior squad at Ross and were roundly cheered by the junior scullers as they crossed the line a length clear.
