Mixed success for Ross-on-Wye tennis players at team event

Both Under 14 and Under 10 teams were entered by Ross Tennis Centre in the National Aegon Team event. This event supports both adult and junior categories and includes singles and doubles events.

The Under 10 team have now played two matches and have had a win and a loss but gained invaluable experience of team tennis.

Their first match was a home tie against Hereford Whitecross and the Ross youngsters produced some fantastic tennis, which resulted in 5-1 win, three wins in the singles rubbers and the boys winning both the doubles.

Next was a difficult away match to Droitwich against some experienced tournament players. All the team tried their hardest and the results were close but they fell just short, losing 2-4. Playing for Ross are Nikolai, Dylan, Zachary and Thomas. The team are currently lying in second place in the League.

The U14 team have also played two matches with the same outcome. They beat Worcester playing at home and secured a win on all rubbers.

Theo Mayell played some beautiful tennis and comfortably won his match without conceding a game, whilst William Marshall was having a battle with a physically much bigger opponent.

Having lost the first set William staged one of his trademark comebacks and took the match to a deciding tie break. Then, as is normal for him, he managed to turn an inevitable loss into a gutsy win.

When the two Ross boys teamed up for the doubles they proved far too good for the Worcester team and won the match comfortably.

Their next match was away to a very strong Stourport team fielding two county players. Although William and Josh Murphy played well, they were no match for the experienced opponents. A 3-0 loss resulted.

Unfortunately, the scheduled third match was washed out and is waiting to be re arranged against Droitwich.
