Fifty years ago on February 3rd, 1966 the Ross Action Committee was formed to help people with any problems they had.
Among other things Miss Rosemary Rigby, one of the founder members, said she dealt with many different callers, from someone who had a flood in their basement to someone who was looking for a new home for their dog.
A Rotary Club survey had identified what people in the area wanted and
this included a trip out. At first the Committee appealed for drivers to take individuals out for a drive in their own vehicle but later they raised the money needed to buy their own vehicle.
Rosemary Rigby, who is now President of the Ross Action Committee said it was set up to put into action solutions for these people. Although over the 50 years since it was formed many things have changed, many people still want the same things they did in 1966. Rosemary told the Ross Gazette that people who live alone or find it difficult to get out using public transport or taxis, due to disability, age or sight problems, still like to get out and go shopping or on a trip. A chance to visit somewhere new such as seeing the daffodils in bloom, a cup of tea and a chat with friends is still as popular as it ever was. However the Ross Action Committee now runs it own minibus/ambulance which is specially adapted to accommodate people who use wheelchairs.
The service needs more drivers and companions when it resumes its full service on March 1st. Two companions are needed for the the service which operates on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. A driver and a companion are needed for the service which runs on the third Sunday of each month. There is also space for a few more passengers so if you or anyone you know would appreciate a run out, meet people and have a cup of tea please contact Miss Rosemary Rigby on 01989 567426.
Any District Nurses or Doctors who know of anyone who would benefit from the service should also contact Miss Rigby for more information.
