A member of the public contacted police just after 10.30am today (Sunday, June 11th) after seeing an abandoned dog on an island by the River Wye, Wilton, Ross-on-Wye.

The dog’s behaviour on the larger northern island opposite the hall, indicated that its owner had possibly entered the river and a short time later the dog also entered the river.

Police searches are ongoing to trace both the owner and the dog. West Midlands Fire & Rescue and the National Police Air Service are also assisting with the search.

The dog is described as a yellow Labrador Retriever and Airedale Terrier cross, wearing a red collar with a silver disc.

If you have any information which could help police, please contact them on telephone 101 quoting reference 248s of 11 June 2017.UPDATE: A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire Service confirmed that a crew from Ross-on-Wye attended the scene, along with the boat crew from Hereford. The crews assisted with the search of the dog who self rescued. The crews also assisted with a search of the river bank. They left the scene at approximately 2pm.UPDATE: A spokesperson for West Mercia Police confirmed on Monday, June 12th that there had not been a missing person report filed but the police would like to know what happened to the dog and if it safe and well with its owner.
