Distraction thefts have taken place in a Ross-on-Wye supermarket this week. Between 12.20pm-12.40pm on September 20th a member of public had her debit card stolen from within her handbag by a couple who had stopped to ask directions.
The couple produced a map which was placed over the lady’s handbag from where the card was then taken. Two fraudulent withdrawals were subsequently made on the card.

A further distraction theft occurred on the same day in the café area of the same supermarket. A member of the public was approached and again asked for directions and a map produced. It is thought offenders observed the victim paying for goods. A bank card was stolen from the handbag of victim.

Police are appealing for any information about these incidents and the couple involved. The man is described as having olive skin, he could possibly be Eastern European, he is in his 30s with dark hair drawn back, slim build and is above average height, wearing a dark suit. The woman is described as having olive skin, aged in her late 20s to early 30s, of medium build and height with long shoulder-length dark hair in a wavy style. She was wearing a dark jacket and skirt.
These types of offences are happening nationally and Police are running a Nationwide Operation to tackle the problem. Local police urge shoppers to be aware of anyone standing close to them whilst using chip & pin machines, or anyone approaching them and distracting them by asking for directions or similar.
They remind all shoppers to be aware of where your purse or wallet and cards are at all times.
