Residents were evacuated from an elderly care home following a fire on Saturday, July 15th.
Police were called at 2.06pm on Saturday by colleagues at Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, to a report of a fire at Ganarew Residential Care Home, located between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth.
One resident, a man in his 90s, who was taken to hospital in Hereford to be assessed for treatment after smoke inhalation, has sadly since died.
The other residents were safely evacuated from the premises in Ganarew Road while the fire service were in attendance and they were allowed to return to the home later that afternoon.
Inspector Gerard Smith said: “The fire was contained to one room and extinguished, officers worked closely with colleagues from the local council and H&W Fire and Rescue Service to ensure the elderly occupants who were evacuated were safe and comfortable. Investigators will now be working to establish the cause of the fire.”A spokesperson for Herefordshire Council said they understood that approximately 30 people, including residents and staff were evacuated during the fire. They added that the care home staff had worked hard to evacuate the residents safely and successfully. "They did a really good job to get so many people to safety," they commented.
