A FIRE safety warning has been issued after the remains of a fire were discovered beneath trees at Newent Lake.

Newent Town Council shared advice from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service following the discovery, amid continuing hot and dry conditions across the county.

The council warned that dry grass and undergrowth surrounding the lake could catch fire extremely quickly, with even a small spark capable of causing serious damage.

Visitors have been urged to take extra care and avoid lighting fires as the warm weather continues.

The warning comes as authorities across the Forest of Dean raise concerns about the risk of wildfires, with the remains of campfires and disposable barbecues continuing to be found in woodland.

Forest of Dean District Council said Forestry England staff were still discovering evidence of fires and barbecues despite the heightened risk.

Discarded glass, cigarettes, campfires and barbecues can all potentially start fires, threatening woodland, wildlife, businesses and communities.

People visiting the Forest have been asked to take glass bottles and jars home, fully extinguish cigarettes and dispose of them responsibly.

Disposable barbecues and fires should not be used in woodland or grassland, while motorists have also been reminded to park responsibly and leave enough room for emergency vehicles.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said one small spark could be enough to start a wildfire during the current dry spell.

It has also advised people not to throw cigarettes from car windows and to use barbecues only in designated safe areas, where they should never be left unattended.

Anyone who discovers a fire at Newent Lake or elsewhere in the countryside should move to a safe location and call 999 immediately rather than attempting to tackle the blaze themselves.

The warnings aim to protect outdoor spaces during summer, when prolonged dry weather can leave vegetation particularly vulnerable to fire.
