FIRE crews have been carrying out checks across the Forest of Dean this morning following multiple reports of smoke in the area.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said that crews were deployed to investigate the reports of smoke, but no fire has been confirmed in the Forest of Dean.

The service said it believes the smoke may be blowing across South Wales.

Residents across the Forest of Dean in Berry Hill and Coleford and surrounding areas, including parts of Monmouthshire have reported the smell of smoke and haze which has filled the sky.

The impact of the smoke from the wildfires further afield has had an impact on villages nearby, including Monmouth. Monmouth Rowing Club had to cancel their training session for the Masters Rowing Championship next month short this morning due to the strong haze of smoke.

The smoke has also been affected parts of Herefordshire, including Ross where Hereford Fire Station has issued a statement to concerned residents.

A spokesman said said: "Smoke from the ongoing wildfire near Llangynidr is drifting across to parts of Herefordshire.

"The incident is being dealt with by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue crews. If smoke is affecting you check this advice offered by Public Health Wales.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews had been working throughout the weekend alongside partner agencies and specialist contractors.

In an update issued on Sunday morning, the service said smoke remained visible and was affecting communities in and around the area.
