Over 100 children took part in a special day of cricket last Wednesday, when Ross Cricket Club hosted its annual Chance to Shine inter-school tournament.
Chance to Shine is the The Cricket Foundation charity set up to encourage the playing of the game in schools. It recognises the power of cricket to help young people acquire important skills, values and attitudes for their future lives. But for the competitors on June 22nd it was all about playing cricket and having some fun. Coaches and Young Leaders from Ross Cricket Club were on hand to umpire and score the games: Therese Warwick, Christiaan Ferreira, Sebastian Warwick, James Tiffen, Harry Porter and Michael Jeffryes, ably abetted by members of staff from the participating schools.
After several exciting matches the final was played out between Ashfield A and Walford A. Ashfield Park won the toss and put Walford in to bat first. In an incredibly close game Walford A scored 239 for 4 and Ashfield Park 233 for 4. Walford Primary School took the Chance to Shine competition title, winning £60 worth of cricket equipment for their school. See the full report in this week's Gazette.
