Ross should be getting a deep clean this week, Councilor Richard Mayo told the Ross Town Councillors at their meeting on Monday, September 11th.
He said:?“There will be a team of cleaners in each street in the town centre from about 4.30am one morning to carry out a thorough clean.”
He told the Councillors that this is as a result of public pressure and complaints. Councillor Mayo said that as a trader in the town he often heard complaints about the amount of litter, especially cigarette stubs. He?then challenged every business in the town to take responsibility for their own area. He said that if every business spent five minutes every morning looking after their own individual area it would make a great improvement to the appearance of the streets.
Austerity and cuts to the County Council budget was blamed for the litter in Ross streets. Councillor Phil Cutter told members of Ross Town Council that there is only one person responsible for emptying the litter bins in Ross and when he is not in work due to holidays, there is no-one to take over.
He said that as a County and Town Councillor he is very aware that money is tight but he said the system needs to be more efficient. A street cleaning machine does help to keep the streets clean but Cllr Cutter said that this then has to be taken back to Hereford to be emptied.
He also said that he thinks people need to be educated to become good citizens and clear up their own mess.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
