MADAM, Nice to hear that Cllr Atkinson is prepared to provide 'a bit' more information regarding the closure of Ross Swimming Pool and its relocation to JKHS on the outskirts of the town. It is also gratifying to know that he thinks it 'utterly wrong' that the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Ross Community Hospital is to have its hours cut. He is 'very concerned' (Page two Ross Gazette 10.10.12) at the lack of consultation about this change. Why then at a meeting last year did he agree to 'keep secret' the PROPOSAL that our pool, youth club and other properties, should be sold, raising the £7 million(?) The people of Ross have spoken. In three days of petitioning I have gathered over 400 signatures against the swimming pool plan. He wonders why the hospital plans have not been explained to councillors and residents. I agree. I also wish to know why Rossians have not been told of these 'proposed' plans for the swimming pool and their opinions asked for?
We do not want to wait and be told (like the hospital) that the decision has been made for us by County Hall.
In his letter to the editor (page 10 of the Ross Gazette 10.10.12) Cllr Atkinson, in response to my petition, said that people would give 'different answers' if told that a £6 million 'investment' (I had heard £5 million) would be made into a leisure centre at JKHS. What would happen to the leftover £1 million? Would it be spent in Ross or Hereford?
I take issue with the Councillor's assumption that the present pool brings 'little or no' trade into the town. On the contrary, the location and ease of parking means that many people combine a swim with shopping and social activities. Revenue from the car park would be greatly reduced as well.
Get off the fence, Councillor, and listen to what the people are saying.
The petition is still available for signing at the Larruperz, The Man of Ross Inn or Jacqueline's cafe. Thank you to all those who have supported me so far.
Julia Southan, Ross
