Today, Thursday, April 21st 2016, marks the Queen’s 90th birthday. To celebrate, the Ross Gazette team have been delving into the archives, to find photographs documenting the Queen’s visits to Ross-on-Wye.
Since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd 1953, she, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, have visited Ross-on-Wye twice. During each visit, thousands of residents gathered, hoping to meet the woman who is now Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
The Queen’s first visit to Ross took place on 24th April 1957. Prior to this visit, Ross had not had an official visit from a reigning monarch in over 1,000 years.
The Queen’s second visit happened on July 11th, 2003, when she made a short visit to John Kyrle High School.
