Madam, Pondering 'Yes' or 'No' about the Alternative Voting system?
Imagine that there are a hundred voters and three candidates. One candidate gets 31 votes, one gets 33 votes, and one gets 36 votes. Under the present system the candidate with 36 votes wins, leaving 64 voters who did NOT vote for the winner.
The candidate has won on a minority of the votes cast and about two-thirds of our present MPs have been elected on this basis.
This current 'first-past-the-post' system, so-called, is only fair if there are just two candidates. The Alternative Vote System will ensure that at least 50% of voters have chosen the candidate. Vote 'YES' for the Alternative Vote to move us into the 21st century. If not now, when ?
