MADAM, The BBC recently devoted a two-hour programme on Radio 5 to running an 'election' under the Alternative Vote (AV) scheme that some wish to impose on our Parliamentary elections.
Despite the claims of supporters that AV ensures that the 'winner' has the support of at least half of the electors, the BBC 'election' resulted in no person reaching the threshold and, as a consequence, the election would have to be run again.
Imagine the impact on a real election. A number of constituencies could be forced to re-run their elections time and time again, no doubt with fewer and fewer people bothering to vote.
AV is a bad system. It is not proportional, not fair and, as the BBC proved, doesn't even work.
I urge your readers to vote NOtoAV on May 5th.
