As many people returned to work after the New Year bank holiday today (Tuesday, January 3rd), the Met Office has issued a Yellow Severe Weather Warning for ice in the West Midlands.

Frank Saunders is a Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office. He said: “We are advising commuters to pay particular attention to the potential for ice and frost to affect journeys. Although most gritted surfaces will stay ice-free, there is a particular for risk that pavements and untreated roads, especially minor ones, could be very slippery.

Motorists are advised to take extra care. It can take as much as ten times as long to stop on an icy road. If you can, you should increase the distance between you and the car in front of you by around 20 seconds.
