Jesse Norman, Herefordshire MP, Paymaster General and Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said Brexit could result in pubs being able to sell cheaper beer as it would be possible for the government to lower the duty paid on beer sold over the bar

Speaking during a debate on differential rates of beer duty on Wednesday, June 26th, Mr Norman said the UK is currently bound by EU regulations which tax beer at the point of production rather than the point of distribution.

He added: ‘Once the UK has left the EU then of course the Government and Parliament will no longer, we expect, be bound by this directive and there should be much greater opportunity to explore creative proposals to redress the balance.”

If the UK decides not to abide by EU rules on pricing, the government would be free to tax supermarkets and pubs differently for their drinks. This could put an end to it being much cheaper to buy your beer in a shop to drink at home rather than in a pub.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
