Hamilton Stiller Estate agents, a Ross-on-Wye business, have finished their refurbishment of a local landmark; the Man of Ross House, and recently moved their office into the space.
The shop space, which had been rather neglected prior to Hamilton Stiller’s makeover, is located in the kitchen and the buttery of John Kyrle’s House. Other local businesses have opened in other parts of the philanthropist’s home.
The building is oozing with local history; after John Kyrle died in 1724, the house went to his relatives. Walter Kyrle turned the house into an inn, the King’s Arms. It later became divided off, and several houses and shops were formed.
In 1851, the space became the Thomas Roper chemist, and then the Thomas Matthews chemist in 1876. Andrew Drake, one of the directors at Hamilton Stiller, told the Ross Gazette that they identified the old acid store for the chemists, by finding old warning signs in the basement.
The team at Hamilton Stiller took on the building at the end of July, and the refurbishment took about a month to complete, and all local businesses were used to complete the renovation. They moved in to the office on Friday, September 11th.
