Ross Auction Centre was abuzz as a blistering lamb trade took centre stage, selling at remarkable rates of up to 302 pence per kilo and £159 per head (August 14). Auctioneer William Probert noted an exhilarating trade from start to finish, especially with well-meated Continentals consistently trading between 280p – 302ppkg.
While lambs were undoubtedly the highlight, finished cattle also witnessed an encouraging trade, albeit with a shorter entry. Their scarcity saw them quickly snapped up, with the best quality selling between 260p – 305ppkg. DE & SJ Cheacker from Ostbridge Manor Farm garnered attention with heifers reaching a top of 305.00p per kilo and £1793.40 per head. Notably, DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm also showcased stellar cattle, receiving £1890.97 for their steers.
The Eckley Bros from Munderfield Court made headlines with their Continental young bulls. One standout sale reached an impressive £1803.10, with an overall average price for bulls settling at 239.89 pence per head.
In the lamb segment, R J Watkins from Great Corras Farm stole the limelight with a top price of £159. SJ & EL Stables of Kings Pitt Farm weren’t far behind, registering 302p for their 43kg lamb and also topping the cull ewes category, with their entries selling for as much as £166.
Cull ewes had their moment too. With a shorter entry than usual, the market saw brisk sales of Continentals between £140 - £166. Mule x ewes, especially the well-meated variety, changed hands from £110 - £125. The leaner sorts were also in demand, selling between £85 - £98.
