A surge in the cattle and lamb trade was observed, indicating an uplift in demand at Ross Auction Centre on Monday, 7th August 2023.

The market saw the sale of 37 finished cattle, 11 cull cows, 1,266 lambs, and 274 cull ewes and rams.

Despite a short entry of clean cattle, largely due to a falling trade in the past weeks, auctioneer Richard Williams noted an improvement in prices compared to the previous week. Steers fetched the top price per kilo at 260p and a commendable £1,688.88 per head, courtesy of H.W. White & Son, Portfield Farm. Heifers followed closely, with the top price per head at £1,540, and 250p per kilo.

The lamb sale at 9 am saw a seasonally reduced entry but met an impressive trade. Prices were approximately £8 higher than the previous week. Notably, lambs reached 295p per kilo, with heavier sorts fetching up to £147. The overall average price of lambs stood at £118 per head, with an average weight of 42kg. S.P. Jones from Llancloudy Farm bagged the top vendor’s price for lambs at £147.

Ewes experienced an improved trade with a consistent entry. Despite several pens of smaller ewes affecting the overall average, better-quality ewes reached up to £125. M & R Sammons from Nant Farm secured the top vendor’s price for ewes at £125.

The sale also witnessed better cows achieving prices up to 177p per kilo and £1,780 per head. Top vendors in this category included PA IA & GA Robertson from Oakey Farm, fetching £1,780.62.

As an essential note for vendors, all payments are slated to be completed within two weeks from the sale date.
