A young man from Ross-on-Wye has started an internet campaign, urging Herefordshire Council not to make excessive cuts to the bus service, which he says are vital to many communities across the County.

Jordan Creed, 23, told the Ross Gazette he wanted to get the local community more involved in issues affecting the whole of Herefordshire.

He explained that the campaign is in an embryonic stage. He has established a Facebook page, raising awareness for the issue, and so far it has almost 100 likes. His online petition has approximately 215 signatures. He said the next step of the campaign, once it has gained some momentum, is to lobby the local councillors, to campaign for better public transport.

He explained that a lot of young people in the county are working in jobs in the service industry; and as these types of jobs typically only pay the minimum wage, they may struggle to pay for driving lessons. Even after they pass their test, finding the money to buy a car, and paying for all the running costs, can be a challenge.

As a result of this, he says a lot of young people in the county rely on the bus service to get to work.

Jordan argued: “In Herefordshire its bus services have been one of the most affected by cutbacks in the whole of the UK. The extent of this is shown by the fact that since 2010 there has been a 49% cut in funding resulting in 13 routes being cut and the reduction of 31 services.”

He added: “On a personal note, this is something that is very important to me, as I have relied on buses during my time in education and still do in order to have a social life.”
