In the run up to UK’s anticipated Union exit, campaigners on both sides of the Brexit debate are working to try and get Britain the best deal possible.
Local pro-Brexit group, Herefordshire For Brexit, were in Hereford High Town recently, aiming to show that leave means leave. They accompanied the regional organisers from the West Midlands to show the strength of feeling in the county for a No Deal Brexit.
Both visitors to the stand and passers-by were approached and asked: “If Theresa May’s Brexit Plan is voted down again by Parliament, which of the following would you support, Leave With No Deal, Postpone Brexit, or Vote Again?”
The members there reported that 94% preferred a No Deal Brexit, which included several Remain voters who just want the government to “get on with it”.
Campaign Co-Founder, Christopher Kingsley, was “not surprised” at the strength of feeling. He said:“People aren’t stupid! They know that we are subject to a campaign of scare tactics and doom-laden reports about what a No Deal Brexit would mean. They realise that there may be a period of adjustment without a deal but overwhelmingly feel that any small inconveniences will be worth it in the long run.
“The other main feeling, again unsurprisingly, is that people don’t believe a word that the politicians are telling us any more.”
Herefordshire for Brexit will continue to campaign on behalf of the sizeable majority in the county who voted to Leave the European Union. They also plan to support national initiatives planned by Leave Means Leave, including the March To Leave from Sunderland to London at the end of March, spearheaded by Nigel Farage.
However, Herefordshire for EU want to give the power back to the people. They are taking part in a People’s Vote March in London, on March 23rd.
Whether you voted leave or remain in 2016, Herefordshire for EU campiagners believe that ‘you would have to agree, Brexit negotiations have not gone smoothly’. They describe Westminister as a ‘political gridlock’, and say that many people, including many MPs, think the only way through the mess is to put the question back to the people.
The precise question is still yet to be formulated, but the campiagners hope to show Parliament that they want to have their say in the final decisions.
Organisers are declaring that the march on March 23rd is “the chance to demand that your voice is heard again”.
There were big marches in London last year, in June and October, involving over 750,000 people. Herefordshire for EU is organising coaches to help people to join the march; they will leave from Malvern and Ledbury stations and from Hereford Merton Meadow car park. Opinion polls suggest that many people have changed their minds since 2016. Some who voted remain now want to leave because they are fed up with the delay, whilst some of those who voted to leave now want to remain because they have discovered more about what leaving means and dislike the government’s deal.
