On Wednesday, February 28th at Linton and District History Society, Nigel Jefferies will talk on the origin and operation of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Navigation which once provided a direct waterway between Hereford and Gloucester.

Next month there are two very special lectures, on March 7th Dr. Richard Long will explain “Why Islam won the Crusades”. This is the Society’s annual Founders’ Lecture, where an eminent speaker is invited to talk on their area of expertise.

Dr. Long is an academic and retired diplomat who served in the Middle East and now lectures extensively on the subject. He has lectured to the Society before and they expect another informative and entertaining evening.

In a change to the published programme, the talk on March 14th will be on “Eighteenth Century Family, Fashion and Murder most Foul” by Carol Killinger. This will put the spotlight on Thomas Harley who was Lord Mayor of London and a Privy Councillor to King George III. He lived at Berrington Hall, near Leominster, now a National Trust property where Carol works.

Meetings are held in Linton Village Hall, HR9 7RX, commencing at 7pm. Non Members are very welcome, and the cost is £3.00 each meeting, including refreshments.
