A new car parking scheme has been introduced at Morrisons supermarket, Ross. The scheme, which is already in place, will allow shoppers to use the car park for free for a maximum of 2.5 hours. Tickets will be issued to those who stay longer than the allocated time. The system, which takes photos of car registrations entering and leaving the car park, is run by a private company. A number of readers contacted the Ross Gazette to express their views on the new system. Lance Allison posted on our Facebook page "I would have thought 2.5 hours was ample time to do your shopping the shop isn't that big, I assume this has been introduced because again as usual people have been taking the mickey using it as a free public car park, And have gone off into town leaving less space for customers, I'm surprised they haven't done this before really." Robert Mason also supported the new car parking restrictions "The full car park prevents many people from using the store. The car park is often full whilst the shop has few people in it. I agree with restrictions there." A few concerns were raised by residents regarding how the system would work if shoppers were to return on the same day. Including Sue Lewis who posted her concerns to our Facebook page "I do shopping for 3 of my clients on the same day so how does that work?" The Ross Gazette contacted Morrisons to clarify the situation for returning shoppers and the store confirmed to us that each visit is classed as a new visit. Following the recent planning decision regarding a new Tesco supermarket in Ross, Councilor Andrew Atkinson told The Ross Gazette "Given the threat of a new Tesco that Morrisons has just faced and the probability that they will re-apply. It's an extremely hostile strategy to put in place right now." Cllr Atkinson added "One of the main factors influencing the support given to the Tesco application was their offer of free parking and the encouragement of people making linked visit, this means visiting the supermarket and the town centre."
