A TALENTED young cellist, who grew up in Orcop, will fulfil an early ambition when her trio plays at the Spring Concert for Craswall evening.

Hattie Butterworth has wanted to take part in the charity music events in the Black Mountains since she was at school at Kingstone High.

The 20-year-old, who is now a student at the Royal College of Music in London, was delighted when Concerts for Craswall’s Sue Norrington e-mailed her to ask if she’d like to play at this year’s Spring Concert.

The Odora Trio, including violinist, Sophie Hinson and pianist, Songeun Choi, will play a highly varied programme with some “crazy”, “exciting” and “dramatic” pieces at St Michael’s Church, Michaelchurch Escley, on Saturday, March 10th from 7.30pm.

And Hattie say she’s “really, really excited.”

“It’s going to be really good to go back to Herefordshire. I have got a lot of friends and family coming. It’s nice to play for them,” she said.

The trio formed in 2016 and has performed in churches around London and at charity events. But the concert at Michaelchurch church will be special for Hattie who will play before friends and family who have not heard her perform since she was younger.

The concerts are a treat for the audience too.

“In Herefordshire you don’t always get to go to concerts but Concerts for Craswall is great, it allows people to be exposed to this kind of music, and St Michael’s is very romantic,” said Hattie.

And to suit the venue the trio has devised a dramatic and exciting programme.

“It’s very varied, lots of the pieces I absolutely adore. The Schubert trio in B flat is a massive piece and very exciting. It’s equal in its parts so every member of the trio is very involved.

“Rachmaninov’s Trio Elegiaque is a short piece, one movement that’s very exciting as well.

“After the interval, the violinist and I will play a duo, Ravel’s Sonata, that’s really crazy, exciting work. It was at the forefront of music at the time. It’s incredibly dramatic and very difficult to play. There’s a lot of intensity,” said Hattie.

To finish the young trio will play Dubussy’s beautiful Trio in G Major.

“It’s a really sweet piece that he wrote when he was about 15 or 16. It’s very lyrical and cute with beautiful melodies.”
