ROSS-on-Wye’s Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre is celebrating 15 years of offering free, life-changing support to local residents facing financial hardship.

The centre, based at Ross Baptist Church, first opened in 2010 in partnership with the national charity CAP and with support from other local churches. Since then, it has helped more than 1,500 people across the Wye Valley to become debt-free and rebuild their lives.

Debt Centre Manager Elaine Loe said the milestone was a chance to celebrate both the team’s efforts and the courage of those who sought help: “We are celebrating every single one of the amazing people we have helped over the last 15 years. Debt can be easy to fall into and hard to get out of, without expert help, especially with how high the cost of essentials is right now.”

Elaine explained that many clients come to CAP after struggling to afford basic needs: “Living on a low income combined with a change in circumstances can quickly lead to spiralling debts. We’ve supported people who’ve had to borrow to pay for essentials, regularly skipped meals, and gone without their basic needs.”

A special anniversary service was held on Sunday, October 19, at Ross Baptist Church, attended by Mayor Linden Delves and guests from churches across the Wye Valley. The service featured client stories, a video about the centre’s work, and a slideshow celebrating its achievements, followed by a shared meal at The Venue.

Elaine said CAP’s mission remains as vital as ever: “We work with local churches to help people in our area break free from the chains of debt and poverty. Our aim is to give people the opportunity not just to survive, but to thrive.”
