AN INTREPID rowing club couple have put their best feet forward and reached Everest base camp.

Jan and David Rosser, Ross Rowing Club secretary and bar manager, made it there on Monday during their Himalayan trek.

They were following almost a century on in the footsteps of Everest pioneer and regular Ross visitor Sandy Irving, who disappeared on the summit of the mountain with George Mallory in 1924.

Irving, himself a talented rower who won the Boat Race with Oxford and triumphed at Henley Royal Regatta with Royal Shrewsbury School, was a frequent visitor to the town, where he spent his summer holidays as a child staying with his aunt.

Jan posted of their base camp trek: “It’s day 8, 5,360m, WE MADE IT! Left in -6C at 6am for the six-hour trek there and two hours back.

“It was tough, one foot in front of the other, follow the Sherpa, amazed that I managed it, as at the break half way I was so tempted to stay there!

“Great to see base camp busy with Everest climbers, clean and tidy. Never again! We are absolutely exhausted and it’s so difficult to sleep at altitude!”

The club posted: “Massive well done from all your friends at @ross.rowingclub.”
