A planning application to build ten houses on land near to Merrivale Lane has caused concern for many residents.

Some of these attended the Town Council meeting on Monday, December 10th, to express their concern for the potential planning near Merrivale Lane.

The Ruth Lilian McQueen Keohane Discretionary Trust wants to build 10 homes on the 1.5-acre paddock which is currently used for grazing and contains a row of trees and a small stable.

The planning application details 10 dwellings, which the local residents feared would increase congestion on the already busy neighbouring roads.

Danny Haines, of Princess Way, said he found it was like a nightmare coming off Alton Street to go across Merrivale.“There were 22 cars parked there on Saturday, 20 on Sunday and 17 tonight,” he said.“The proposal is looking to bring an access road and T junction onto what is effectively a single track lane. It is very dangerous and needs to be re-engineered.”He said he was also concerned about privacy with Princess Way residents potentially being overlooked by the new houses.Jonathan Daniels, another objector, said residents believed there could be Roman remains on the proposed housing site.“I have absolutely no knowledge of such, but perhaps it should be investigated prior to going any further,” he said.Another resident said parking issues were diabolical and the road was very dangerous.Architects working for the scheme say the housing estate would be formed around a cul-de-sac street and would use trees as natural screening between the homes. Residents also expressed concerns about their privacy being inhibited. One resident found that properties 6, 7, and 8 would especially affected and residents would be overlooked.

Additionally, one resident told the Town Council that there was a possibility of Roman remains in the land that could be built on. He said: “I have heard there could be Roman remains here. Even if this is not true, the land should be thoroughly inspected before any building.”

Councillor Jane Roberts commented on how good it was to see local residents share their views on local planning issues. She said: “There is planning meeting next Tuesday you should come to where you can share these concerns.”

The meeting begins at 7pm on Tuesday, December 18th, and will be in the Town Council building.
