Dear Editor,

My sister and I were mulling over a couple of issues raised in the Ross Gazette over the last few months, the first regarding the need for a suitable symbol for Ross, and the second regarding whether a festival for Ross would be a good idea.

We concluded that perhaps there is one answer for both: what about making more of Ross’s very strong hedgehog connection? A hedgehog would be a charismatic and highly marketable symbol for Ross, and what better way to celebrate Ross than to have a hedgehog festival?

Perhaps an autumn/harvest festival, making the most of those connections of hedgehogs with apples and other autumn fruits, fallen leaves etc. There could be hedgehog-themed treasure hunts, games, and competitions which could involve local schools; local ciders, food specialities and crafts could be showcased, and it could be an opportunity for raising awareness of ecological issues.

Editor’s note: There currently is a Hedgehog Festival, which takes place each year, about the time of the May Fayre, but this festival is based around Ross Library, local primary schools, and high street shops. This festival focuses on creative work inspired by the beloved spikey creature. An additional Autumn festival might be a fantastic idea.
