Dear Editor,
I was interested in the recent letter headed ‘Move the Town Council’. This suggested a move to the NatWest bank building.
Your correspondent suggested this additional purchase could be funded by the sale of the Corn Exchange, which the Town Council currently occupies.
The alternative is to do what the Town Council actually voted to do on 14/4/2014, which was to move to the Old Chapel on Cantilupe Road, which is owned by the Town Council and rent out the Corn Exchange, thus generating additional income.
Sadly, after the May 2015 elections, a majority of Town Councillors decided that they rather liked the muted grandeur and high ceilings of the Corn Exchange. They voted not to move and instead to sell the Old Chapel and lose it forever.
Currently, the Chapel stands empty, costing the Council Tax payers of Ross thousands of pounds a year in maintenance and rates, for no return.
There has been talk that the Chapel needs a lot of work doing to it. That’s hogwash. It is in a perfectly reasonable state to rent out and that is surely good enough for the Town Council too.
