A motion calling on all Herefordshire Councillors to take a 10% cut in their allowance will be tabled at a full council meeting, on Friday.

The motion has been proposed by Councillor Andrew Atkinson and will be seconded by Councillor Paul Rone, of the St Martins and Hinton ward, in Hereford.

Cllr Atkinson said: "We are in the middle of extremely difficult financial times that have seen all kinds of cuts and measures to keep the council functioning.

"We are not well paid, as some peoplethink that we are, but I believe that if we take a cut then we can lead by example, and ask the senior officers, who do earn large sums of money to do the same.

"There are big changes being made to many services including libraries and I don't want to see us in the situation where staff at the bottom end of the pay scale have to go, but senior staff, because their roles are more strategic and can't really be dispensed with, stay.

"This means that staff at the bottom lose 100% of their income but the because senior staff members stay they keep 100% of theirs, as nothing changes.

"It is only fair and equitable for us to make tough decisions together so lets all take a pay cut."
