TOWN Councillor, Daniel Lister is taking part in a number of extreme mud runs over the coming months to raise money for charities and to help a disabled athlete achieve his dream.
The first event will be the UK Obstacle Course Racing Championships, which will be held at the Nuclear Fallout Brentwood event in Kent, on November 14th, where Daniel will be tackling the course with a team, along with Shaun Gash, who is a T5/6 Paraplegic.
The 14 members of the team, called No Fear on Wheels, will take Shaun and his chair though the mud and over obstacles, via a set of ropes, harnesses and team work. The course, which is 16k, includes 130 obstacles.
Daniel told the Ross Gazette “It really is something to see and such a moving experience. I have been in Shaun’s team for some time and learnt so much. It has really changed my outlook on life and every time we cross the finish line it’s hard not to cry.”
If the team completes all 130 obstacles on the day, they will qualify for the World Championships which will take place next year.
Daniel, who is the National Ambassador for Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) UK, travels all over the country to attend various obstacle course races and met Shaun through one of these events. It will be a big day for everyone involved as this will be the first time ever the UK Championship and OCR will have an adaptive athlete team category. Daniel and his team will be raising money for Cancer Care as well as Alexandra House, which provides short break care for children and young people with additional needs.
As well as taking part in the championships, the No Fear on Wheels team will also be being filmed for a documentary by the University of Lincoln about obstacle course racing in the UK.
The second event will be the Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest, on November 21st, which Daniel will be competing in alone, and will be raising money for the charity, Children with Cancer. The event is the world’s biggest urban obstacle course and takes place in five major UK city centres. Daniel will be taking part in the one based in Wembley, London. The course will be through the city and Wembley Park, where he will be tackling 75 obstacles.
Daniel combines his mud running and obstacle racing with his Town Council work and his employment with PGL. He told the Ross Gazette:?“I bet there are not many councillors who roll around in mud nearly every weekend.”
