Police in Herefordshire are cracking down on traffic offences on local roads.

Police from West Mercia and Warwickshire have established a new department at Hereford, which will focus on the whole of the county, and officers will be more proactive to take action when motorists break the rules.

One of the main aims is to make the local roads safer, and to lower the amount of road traffic collisions that happen in Herefordshire, particularly on roads identified as "high-harm routes", such as the A49.

Checks will also be conducted to make sure that vehicles are safe to be on the roads, for example, that their tyre tread depth in within the legal limit, that the break-discs are working correctly, et cetera.

If you are unsure if your vehcle is road legal, it may be worth booking it into a garage to check it.

Local police have also been tweeting advice for motorists. This morning, Police Herefordshire tweeted: "With dirty gritted roads please ensure that your registration number is clear & legible. If it is not visible you could face a fine of £100."
