The first of the British asparagus is a much-anticipated event amongst chefs and home-cooks alike. But the tasty green stems were late to arrive this year due to the inclement weather.

However, such was the anticipation and kudos for purchasing the first spears that it provided an excellent opportunity for Chris Chinn, of Cobrey Farms in Coughton, to raise some money for charity.

The very first boxes were “auctioned” to Chris’ contacts in wholesale, with all proceeds going to St Michael’s Hospice. Only eight of his customers were lucky enough to offer winning bids, between them raising around £2000.

And some of those lucky winners went on to auction the boxes further down the supply chain in aid of other worthy causes close to their own hearts.

Chris said: “It was the happiest and healthiest of starts to what promises to be another delicious asparagus season!”
