Madam, congratulations to Councillor Caroline Utting on her election to Town Council but I have to confess I was a little disappointed with her response in the Gazette to my letter of April 27th.

Firstly, of course the litter was left by visitors to the Rope Walk over the Bank Holiday weekend, who else would have left it? As to her comment taken from the Gazette that Amey had carried out regular clean-ups. I am sure they did, but not regularly enough to deal with the amount of litter left by people drawn to the riverside due to the weather being so warm.

Common sense should have warned them more clean-ups would be needed. We have to attract more visitors to Ross, not discourage them from coming, by accusing them of thoughtlessly leaving their discarded rubbish lying around. Most had left their full carrier bags by the overflowing bins in a vain attempt to be responsible visitors and as many came by coach they could not take it home with them.

Regarding her comments that the County Council, not the Town Council, are responsible for keeping the town litter free and any concerns we have over this and the Y-Zone should be directed to it. Surely our Town Council has a responsibility to us to be the voice of Ross and air our concerns to the County Council, isn't that why we vote for them?

Susan Price, Ross
