Many readers have noticed new signs which have been put up in some of the public areas in Ross-on-Wye, these include the Caroline Symonds Garden, the Rope Walk and Crossfields. The Ross Town Council agreed to provide the signs some time ago but they have only recently been put in place.
The suggestion was made to the committee which looks after the Town Council’s open spaces by the deputy clerk. This was due to a number of complaints about people being frightened by dogs which were off their leads, and the continuing issue of dog waste.
Although there is no official order in place which would make the rule enforceable, the Council hopes that people will respect the signs. They want dog walkers to use their common sense to ensure that everyone who uses these areas feels safe.
A spokesperson said that the Council wants to ensure that these areas can be enjoyed by as many people as possible. This includes people who walk their dogs, but also families with small children or the elderly. These areas are popular with families, especially in the summer and the spokesperson said that if you are picnicking or have a small child playing it can be intimidating if dogs run over or jump up because they are off the lead. This is the case even if they are friendly, as a stranger will not necessarily be able to tell the difference.
The Council would like to ask dog walkers to be aware of others, so sunny afternoons in summer are not spoilt for some.
The public area at Long Acre can still be used by owners who like to let their dogs enjoy a run off the lead. and the spokesperson added there are other areas which hare not maintained by the Town Council where dogs can be let off the lead.
One local dog owner, Peter Martin has questioned whether the signs will detract from the ‘dog friendly’ reputation that is currently growing.
