Driving a clapped out old car, bought from a breaker's yard, across the Alps may seem a mad challenge, but three local men have done just that to raise money for charity.

When they decided to enter the Staples to Naples Rally, Stuart James and Jason Edwards, from Ross, and Jody Harris, who lives near Hereford, were not allowed to pay more than £150 for their car.

Since they are all car mechanics they have been able to transform the ancient Volvo. They have replaced the tyres, brake pads and pipes, wishbones, the back window and back lights. They also had to tax the car and put it through its MOT.

All the cash collected will go to Macmillan Cancer Research, they have already collected £1,000. Those who helped fund the repairs and the trip have sponsorship stickers on the car.
