Councillor Gordon Lucas, who with a small group of volunteers, has spent many hours working in Ross Churchyard trying to keep it tidy and attractive for visitors, is devastated that his efforts are being hampered by people dumping grass cuttings there.

Gordon told The Ross Gazette that he started working in the churchyard when he was Mayor and now regularly works there on Sunday mornings. He said: "Now it is lighter I start at 6am and I can get quite a lot done."

One of the main tasks is to clip back ivy which threatens to take over trees and graves, he is also helping to tidy paths and he fills in sunken areas with bark chippings and grass clippings.

He said: "We first noticed last year that someone was dumping large quantities of grass cuttings over the wall between the churchyard and Abacus Nursery. At one point it was so high anyone could have walked up the grass and over the wall."

He managed to disperse a lot of it but a fortnight ago a fresh lot was dumped. He said that dealing with other people's garden waste was hampering their efforts in improving the churchyard.

Gordon has asked lots of people if they know who could be responsible. He even wondered if it was the Council's own contractors, but he said that he knew it was not them and they were also wondering who had done it.

If anyone does know anything about the grass please contact Councillor Lucas at Lucas Motorcycles in Brookend Street, Ross
