Pupils at Bridstow CE Primary school near Ross-on-Wye, have been exploring the theme of ‘Flight’ as part of their science week. It started with a dramatisation of the amazing story of the Wright Brothers, as well as a number of mini investigations including ’making a strip of paper fly’, ’levitating ping pong balls’ and ’launching the stomp rocket’.

All four classes were given a challenge related to an aspect of flight. These included designing and testing paper planes, finding out which travelled the furthest and why, through to making hairdryer and sun powered hot air balloons. They were also challenged to build water-rockets that could travel 40 metres across the field.

The children also enjoyed experimenting with self-inflating balloons, surface tension and making mini-rockets using dissolvable tablets, to name a few. Pupils and staff were enthused all week and shared their achievements in a special science assembly held on Friday.

Headteacher, Dan Brearey, told the Ross Gazette: “A great week has been had by all. Children and parents/carers have all commented upon the children’s excitement and enthusiasm to achieve each class’ challenge. This is something that we work hard on at Bridstow to ensure that children remain enthused and excited about their learning”.

Next year Bridstow hope to continue Science Week with a different theme, aimed to excite and engage all of the children in the school again.
