Walford Primary School recognised the achievements of a number of budding inventors and presented the Young Inventor award to year 5 pupil, Gabriel Bornoff.

The school works hard to stimulate inventive thinking and to encourage creativity through an exciting annual Young Inventors’ Award. Frank Myers, Chairman of the Walford Parish Council, attended the special Awards Assembly to present the winners with certificates and trophies.

Mr Myers said, “I am delighted to be a part of this exciting project and am overwhelmed with the amount of creativity generated by Walford’s young people.”

Throughout the assembly, the whole school, parents and staff were pleased to see a number of winning designs and prototypes including a Shoe Collector, that collects and sorts shoes around the house, a Hot and Cold Lunchbox, which has two compartments to keep food chilled or piping hot, an Apple Arm, which enables apples to be picked inside a cushioned cup to avoid bruising the fruit and a Snow-A-Way, involving heated car tyres that can melt snow and ice on roads, to name but a few.

The delighted 2018 winner, Gabriel said, “I am so excited to be Walford’s Young Inventor and the glass trophy is very special!”

Gabriel’s Eco-Washer design and prototype impressed the judging panel with its time and energy-saving benefits by having a split drum to enable a ‘whites’ and ‘colours’ wash at the same time.

Ms George, Headteacher, said, “This inspirational project encourages our pupils to develop their problem-solving skills whilst broadening their conceptual and logical thinking capabilities. We are very fortunate to have the support of members of our community and would like to extend huge thanks to both Frank Myers and his wife, Anthea McIntyre MEP, for their continued support of our school.

“Mr Myers inspired the children with his own, flat cone invention and together with his wife Anthea, been so generous in donating the beautiful glass trophies for individual winning designs.”
