Learning was all about food, fun and fitness at St Mary’s Primary School in Fownhope for Healthy Living Week, from January 23rd to 27th.

With tummies and trainers at the ready, it was a fun packed week as pupils learnt about healthy lifestyles in assemblies and lessons, including healthy eating and keeping active. There were also extra sporting activities arranged throughout the week.

Children were awarded stickers for each different fruit or vegetable eaten at break time. Those who ate five different fruits or vegetables throughout the week were entered into a draw for a small prize.

Children were offered water and milk, which quench thirst and prevent dental problems, which the excessive sugar found in fruit juice and soft drinks can cause.

Every morning before school starts, there was a selection of sporting activities available on the playground, run by Year 6 prefects and overseen by staff. On Friday the sports prefects led a ‘breakfast aerobics’ session on the playground for children and parents.

“It was great fun,” said Keri Meredith, a parent:?“The children loved the playground games and seemed quiet, calm and really happy. The school really supports parents with these ideas. It’s far easier to get your child to eat properly and be active when all their friends are doing it too.”

Mr Milne, Headteacher, added: “We are lucky to have fresh food prepared daily in our on-site kitchen for lunch, Breakfast and After School Club, but this week we took it a step further. At Fownhope we focus on the whole child and healthy, active children learn well.”
