Pupils in Kempley Class at Gorsley Goffs Primary School turned into medieval knights and ladies to celebrate World Book Day recently.
The children all enjoyed a banquet, were entertained by a court jester and they held various tournaments dressed up as characters from stories that involved castles (their topic for this term).
To add to the authentic experience the gym was transformed into a ‘Great Hall’, fit for feasting and general merriment.
Following an enthusiastic tournament including jousting and archery, the children sat down to a banquet of vegetable potage, rustic bread and roasted chicken legs. Goblets of ‘wine’ were raised to the King for a Day, Sam, the tournament champion, and some children were so in character that they wanted to throw their leftovers on the floor so that they could be eaten later by any passing dogs.
The parents were very supportive in this celebration, not only kitting out the children in a myriad of colourful costumes, but also by cooking some of the dishes the youngsters tried. The parents also provided wooden and pewter tableware, befitting such an occasion, and really helping to create a great atmosphere. The school is very grateful for their support and everyone enjoyed a wonderful and memorable event.
