At St Mary’s C of E Primary School, in Fownhope, 36 pupils aged from eight to 11 enjoyed cooking dinner for a party of 80 after just one term at cookery club.

The pupils, many of whom had never cooked or baked before, went from zero to hero and prepared a meal for 80 in the school kitchen. They prepared four different types of pizza, including the fresh homemade dough, garlic bread, fresh salad and pudding.

Designed to be a bit of fun whilst teaching pupils confidence, the club allowed pupils to get messy and have a go in a safe and light-hearted environment.

Headteacher, Mr Milne, said: “Cooking a meal together is a great example of what we focus on at Fownhope, working together and sharing to build children’s confidence and self-esteem whether that’s through cookery, sport, drama or academic subjects."

Over the term pupils mastered cakes, trifles, cookies, icing with piping bags, pastries, pizza, pizza twists and vegetable twists. Pupils were given ingredients and allowed to create everything from scratch with their own preference on flavour and design.

The club was run by three volunteers, Hollie Corbet and Daisy Williams-Corbet, members of staff, and parent, Kate French.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
