Children from Garway Primary School enjoyed developing new wire sculpture skills when renowned local sculptor, Matthew Lane Sanderson, led three days of workshops as part of the school’s annual ‘Grounds Week’.

During the week the school timetable was replaced with a range of activities, with a strong focus on the outdoors. Two massive sculptures, created by Matthew, were on display in the school playground and provided inspiration for poetry written by the children.

Maths took the form of a puzzle trail, solving problems in the school’s extensive woodland area and playing field. During science sessions the children all got to meet three visiting lambs and a visit from the Museum on the Move inspired the children to set up their own local history exhibition, focusing on life in Garway over the last 90 years.

Even chess club was conducted outside with members playing in teams on a giant chess board under the trees.

Parents were invited to view all the work created at an exhibition on Friday afternoon. They also enjoyed outdoor musical performances, including music composed by pupils and played on newly installed outdoor instruments.

Headteacher, Julie Jones, told the Ross Gazette “Throughout the year we see how much our pupils gain from outdoor learning, and during Grounds Week we like to take this a step further by spending as much time as possible outside. With a bit of planning we can cover all aspects of the curriculum in a really memorable way.”
