Weston Athletic were back to winning ways in the North Gloucestershire Division 2 on Saturday, having had no game last week, with a 5 – 3 away victory over Soudley, the score was not a true reflection on the game as Weston dominated for much of the game and should have won by more, Manager Eli Wooding would have been delighted with the performance after Weston produced their best game of the season so far, with players starting to return from injury Wooding will be hoping that the side can now kick on and start putting together a string of results.

The starting 11 on Saturday for Weston had a much more familiar look about it with Wayne Husbands fit again to start at Sweeper behind Shaun Aston and Alec Malsom, in midfield new signing Jack Bray started only his second game for the club and once again excelled with his all round work rate and accurate passing, Eli Wooding was partnered up front by Wes Downing. Weston started the game at a canter and should have been in the lead after only ten minutes but the home sides keeper saved well when Wooding was put through 1 on 1, then completely against the run of play the home side took the lead after 15 minutes with a well struck shot giving keeper Dave Nicholls no chance. Weston did not let their heads drop and after 25 minutes were awarded a penalty which was converted by Wooding to put the scores level, Weston then scored two quick goals before half time, courtesy of Wooding and Downing, to put them 3 – 1 up at the break.

Weston started the second half as they finished the 1st playing some outstanding football and seemed to create chances every time they attacked, only some outstanding goalkeeping by the home sides keeper kept the scores remotely close, within ten minutes of the re start Weston were 4 – 1 up, Captain Burnham played in Downing who rounded the keeper to finish into an empty net, this should have killed the game off but a mad 10 minutes by Weston allowed Soudley to score 2 goals to pull the score back to 4 – 3, Weston eventually ended the game as a contest on 80 minutes, when Downing played in Wooding to score his hat trick and put Weston 5 – 3 up, which is how the game finished. This win pushes Weston up to 4 place in the league and the club will be hopeful of putting together a string of results to challenge for higher places.
