The Courtyard theatre in Hereford has announced a new campaign to fund the refurbishment of its Studio Theatre.

The ground-floor Studio Theatre is a busy and versatile creative space: bringing together lovers of independent cinema, live screenings, children’s theatre, folk music, stand-up comedy, new writing, and much more. Having been in constant use for 28 years, the Studio is now in need of a comprehensive refurbishment to secure its long-term future. In 2025, more than 45,000 tickets were issued for this space, welcoming thousands of people through its doors. For many local children, it’s also where the magic of live performance begins. Every Christmas, The Courtyard produces its own professional children’s show with thousands in attendance.

In this ambitious new refurbishment, The Courtyard will upgrade to wider, more padded seats with higher back support and cup holders. An eco-friendly heating and cooling system will be installed for improved temperature control as well as additional soundproofing and insulation to the improve the quality of space for its patrons.

The project will cost £132,000 with £40,000 being raised internally, The Courtyard is appealing to the public to raise £92,000 by Spring 2027 to transform and future-proof the studio. Donors can select one of the suggested tiers to donate, starting at £25+, donors can become a Roomie, which includes acknowledgment on The Courtyard’s plasma screens and website. In the second tier as a Room Mate with a donation of £200+, which includes a seat plaque and acknowledgment on The Courtyard’s plasma screens and website. Or a Room Maker at £1,000+, this level of donation includes a private film screening, a dedicated seat plaque and acknowledgment on The Courtyard’s plasma screens and website. If successful, the refurbishment will take place in Autumn 2027.

The Courtyard invites individual supporters, creative organisations, and local businesses to help this community arts charity on the path towards futureproofing a central hub of creativity for the community. To find out more about this project or to donate head to www.courtyard.org.uk/makeroom/

The new project comes as The Courtyard prepares to host the fourth edition of My First Film Festival, its annual season of films designed to introduce children to the magic of cinema. This year's programme includes new releases such as Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters and the new live action Moana, as well as nostalgic classics including Muppets Treasure Island and Madeline. Also featured are classic silent film shorts accompanied by live music, with pianist Stephen Horne performing alongside screenings of some of Buster Keaton's greatest works. Stephen is internationally recognised as one of the leading silent film accompanists.

For a number of titles, relaxed screenings will be available as part of The Courtyard's commitment to accessibility. These screenings are specifically designed for those who would appreciate a less formal cinema experience. The lighting will remain low, the volume will be reduced, subtitles will be displayed, and a chill-out room will be available nearby.
