MADAM, I acknowledge that David Williams (Gazette November 9th) describes the new Renton Unit at Hereford Hospital as a superb facility (which it definitely is), but take issue with him describing its approach from the main hospital as a 'complete slum'.

I have taken my brother-in-law for treatment at the Renton Unit on many occasions over the last few months, and will need to do so again when he recovers from his very recent major surgery. Presumably Mr Williams is complaining about the 20 or so yards of the 'hutted wards' corridor you have to walk along to access the unit from the main hospital, which, in itself, cannot remotely be described as a slum.

In all the times that I have been there I have not heard one complaint as described by Mr Williams. The excellent facility that it is, is all that matters to those who, through illness, have to make use of it.
