Buried treasure, two words that are guaranteed to raise the excitement level in anyone. And when I crossed a muddy field and saw flashes of red and blue in the autumn sun last week I felt as thrilled as if I had found rubies and sapphires. So I could understand why Patrick Lewis, the man behind Gamber Produce, was so keen to show me the crop being harvested in a field at Cobrey Farm.

Row upon row of potatoes waited to be scooped up, but these were not your ordinary spud, these potatoes revealed glistening jewel-coloured flesh when Patrick sliced into them. Bergerac is the blue variety and the red ones are Highland Burgundy.

After last year's disastrous harvest Patrick explained it was a leap of faith for farmers to plant potatoes again. He explained that you cannot insure against weather destroying a crop so a lower yield is a knock farmers just have to accept.

Although some reports have suggested that this year has been a bumper year, it is only in comparison with last year, in fact Patrick explained the yield is just back to an average year. But the thrill of discovering buried treasure will keep these farmers planting ready for next year.
